Back in April, I had a good chat with my longtime friend and fellow creative Nikita Hasick. On a fair Friday evening we went out to one of the local parks and drank a few beers. During which I made a few portraits. A little while later I had a chance to match those pictures with an interview. During this, we talked art, life & being an outsider.

Q: Nikita, can you give a brief rundown on yourself?
A: My name is Nikita. I am 29 years old. Born in Moldova but originally from Ukraine, it’s complicated. I’ve studied Animation & illustration at AKV ST. Joost in Breda. I am a visual storyteller.
Q: What genres do you like within visual storytelling?
A: 2D animation, cartoons, series, and shortfilms. That’s what I do.
Q: Do you consider yourself an ‘’outsider’’ artist?
A: …yes. I guess the thought behind inside and outside artists is that an insider is very engaged in the industry. And an outsider works and produces mostly on his own. So yes, I do consider myself an outsider.
Q: Do you see yourself in that same position in the foreseeable future?
A: I would say it depends on what kind of moves I make. Right? From past experiences, I can definitely say I prefer to work alone on my projects. But when an opportunity arises to work in a team, that also excites me, the concept excites me, I wouldn’t pass it. Partially because I haven’t lost hope yet hahaha…I’m pretty young still. But there are a lot of ways to get where you want to go. I am not opposed to becoming ‘’an insider’’ so to say.
Q: You talk about not losing hope in the artistic process. Do you believe it’s important to be an optimist?
A: Yeah for sure. Especially if it is something you are passionate about. Or if it is your work. Or if it is your path of earning money or recognition. You need to be passionate about it. There’s no reason to lose hope.
Q: You’ve been working on your own for a few years now. People haven’t seen a lot of your work. Do you feel you need outside recognition to validate your artwork?
A: It depends on what you want. Strictly talking for myself, then yes. Because I want to make money eventually out of my work and of course that makes it important to gain recognition.
Q: Is it a necessity to do your artwork on a day-to-day level?
A: Yeah for sure
Q: If push comes to shove would your rather be a banker or a politician?
A: I would rather be a banker.
Q: What’s on your radar right now?
A: Oh man….I don’t know. I am just looking forward to the new football season. I am a Leeds United fan and I am really excited about our signings. We are actually playing a friendly match tomorrow in Australia. So it’s going to be really fucking early in the morning and I am not going to watch that. We got a new coach. We have a lot of new signings. We barely managed not to get relegated. And we saw two of our best players leave for a lot of money. I am really optimistic and hopeful. For the rest of it, I am going through life day to day trying to work on projects and myself. That’s it.
